On the Fly Audio with AwesomeTTS

This article covers how to create audio flashcards using on-the-fly TTS in AwesomeTTS. Before you start, you should have a simple deck, using the Basic note type, with a Front and a Back field, like the one below.

We need to add what's called a TTS tag to your card template, to tell Anki that we want some sound to be played while reviewing. Click the Cards button right above the Front field in the editor. We want the sound to play on the back (after revealing the answer), so select the Back Template option on the top left. Then click the Add TTS button at the bottom.

You'll see the following dialog appear. Choose the service you want to use (some are free, some require an API key, if you wish to try paid ones, you can sign up for the AwesomeTTS Plus trial). You'll need to save your choice into a preset if you don't have one already: click Save on the bottom towards the center.

After saving the preset, make sure to choose the following settings:

• Field should be Front
• Type should be Regular field
• Language should be French (France)

Note: in some cases, you may want to choose a different Type:

• Regular: the field should be pronounced in its entirety
• Cloze field: speak non-hidden parts of front, speak everything on back: only use this for cloze fields. The audio on the front will contain everything except for the hidden word (which you have to guess), and the audio on the back will contain everything.
• Cloze field: hidden part only, on back side only: only use this for cloze fields. Only the hidden word will be pronounced, and nothing else. It only makes to use this on the back side.

Then click Insert into Back Template. You'll see the following dialog box. AwesomeTTS has registered that you want to associated this TTS tag with the preset you selected.

Look at your card preview

Back in the Anki browser, click on the Preview field on one of your cards, then click the right arrow to reveal the answer. You should hear the French sound. You can click Replay Audio to hear the audio again. All of your cards which use this note type should now have sound.
